Bhubaneswar, Oct 20:

A woman was reportedly trampled to death and three houses were damaged by a wild elephant which strayed into the Chunakoli basti adjacent to the boundary wall of Infocity in Odisha’s capital city on Sunday evening.

The woman, identified as Chand Besra, was found lying dead near the basti this morning. Her family members and fellow basti dwellers claimed she was killed by an elephant that had strayed into their basti from the Chandaka-Dampara sanctuary and have demanded compensation for the victim’s family, reports said.

Police and Forest department officials have visited the spot and are investigating the matter.

“We are investigating the matter. Payment of compensation can be made only after postmortem is conducted and the report confirms that her death was caused by an elephant. There has to be a police case registered in the matter as well,” said Girish Satpathy , Range Officer, Bhubaneswar of the Forest department.
