Bhubaneswar: A 31-year-old woman of Mayurbhanj district in Odisha has become an entrepreneur by setting up of a flip-flop slipper making unit in her house.

Jayanti Dalei, wife of Santosh Kumar Chanda of Kalama village under Betanati block in Mayurbhanj, has set an example for many others.

Jayanti, a matriculate by qualification, had resorted to tailoring to support her parents before tying the knot with Santosh in 2012, sources said.

She had opened a cosmetics shop at her in-laws place to earn some extra money. Later, she joined a women self-help group (SHG), sources added.

Jayanti had decided to set up a flip-flop slipper making unit in her house after she came across the story of a woman who had become self-employed by manufacturing sandals with minimum investment.

“I had received training on slipper making from a firm in Kolkata. I have opened flip-flop manufacturing unit in my house by availing Rs 40,000 as loan from a bank and arranging some additional funds from my relatives,” said Jayanti.

The 31-year-old is now producing around 100-120 pairs of slippers per day. “I am earning around Rs 40,000 per month from my slipper manufacturing unit. Now, two women from our village are assisting me in slipper making,” she said.

Jayanti has a dream to expand her slipper-manufacturing unit in future. “I have a desire to produce all-kind of sandals and shoes at my unit and provide employment opportunities to other women in our locality,” she added.
