World Elephant Day celebrated at Odisha’s Nandankanan zoo

Bhubaneswar: The World Elephant Day was today celebrated at Nandankanan Zoological Park on the outskirts of Odisha capital with much fanfare.

Prime attraction of this year’s Elephant Day celebrations at the zoo was 1.5-year-old elephant calf ‘Mama’. Zoo director Dr. Hari Shankar Upadhyay fed the baby elephant fruits, which marked the commencement of the celebrations.

Fruits were also provided to other elephants of the zoo on the occasion. A quiz over protection of the pachyderms and a meeting regarding the same were organised on the zoo premises, in which school students, Nandankanan staff and tourists took part.

Notably, World Elephant Day is an international annual event on August 12, dedicated to the preservation and protection of elephants around the globe.

The goal of International Elephant Day is to create awareness on the urgent plight of African and Asian elephants, and to share knowledge and positive solutions for the better care and management of captive and wild elephants.
