Wrong blood transfusion death: Odisha rights body seeks report

Taking suo moto cognizance into the death of a woman due to transfusion of blood of different group at Keonjhar district headquarters hospital (DHH), the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) today sought report from the Health Secretary and Keonjhar Collector within 4 weeks.

The rights body asked the Keonjhar Collector to probe into the incident himself and submit a report within four weeks.

Notably, a woman identified as Sukanti Nayak (50) of Puruna Bazar in Keonjhar town died at the DHH yesterday after A+ blood was administered to her while her blood group was O+.

Accepting administration of blood of wrong group, Keonjhar CDMO Kabindra Prasad Sahoo said, “While Sukanti Nayak was undergoing treatment in medicine ward of the hospital, another woman namely Sukanti Nayak was admitted to Gynaecology ward. Both the patients required blood. The blood which was meant to be administered to the woman admitted in Gynaecology ward was given to Sukanti of medicine ward.”

The official had yesterday dismissed Laboratory Technician Bharti Mohanty and Staff Nurse Hemalata Mahanta in connection with the incident. He has also recommended the Health Department to take action against a doctor for gross dereliction of duty.
