Bhubaneswar, Nov 2:

Farmer suicide cases in Odisha continue unabated as one more farmer has ended life in Nayagarh due to crop failure and loan burden.

The deceased farmer identified as Laxmidhar Bhatt had consumed pesticide on October 28 and was admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack where he was undergoing treatment. However, he breathed his last today after battling for life for five days.

Bhatt, who hails from Raipada village in Nayagarh district, was under severe mental stress due to crop loss owing to deficient rainfall this Kharif season.

Notably, four farmer suicides cases were reported yesterday including a woman farmer. The farmers have been identified as Trilochan Badhatya of Chadheyapalli of Buguda block of Ganjam, Ujjali Bag (45) of Dhushumuda village of Turukela block of Bolangir, Sushil Taria (43) of Attabira block of Jhiliminda village and Premraj Barik (32) of Kermeli village of Gaisilat block.

Though the state government said it is investigating into the causes of 41 farmer suicide cases, the unofficial figure is said to be over 60.
