Young woman thrown into well after being strangulated by beau in Odisha

In a shocking incident, a young woman was allegedly thrown into a well after being strangulated by her lover while both were eloping in Odisha’s Sonepur district last night.

The victim was rescued by locals following which she lodged a complaint with police.

A case has been registered on the basis of her complaint and efforts are on to nab the accused, identified as Jagannath Pradhan of Khuntiapali village under Birmaharajpur police limits, who went absconding after committing the crime, a police official said.

“Jagannath and the 24-year-old woman, both residing in the same village, were in a relationship for the last one year. They decided to get married for which the duo eloped last night. On the way, the accused tried to kill the woman by strangulating her. He later threw her into a well. The victim, after being rescued by locals, lodged a complaint today and a case was registered under Section 493, 417, 323, 307 and 506 of IPC,” said Birmaharajpur SDPO Prasanna Kumar Biswal.

“The victim was sent for medical examination. Raids are being conducted to nab the accused,” the SDPO said, adding that both had physical relation during their love affair and the woman had given him Rs 2 lakh for buying a bike after selling a piece of land .

Sources said, the woman is an orphan and was staying at her uncle’s house from childhood.

She was working as an assistant at a nearby anganwadi kendra.
