Jagatsinghpur: A youth was allegedly beaten to death last night by his friend with a bamboo lathi at Charibatia village under Sadar police limits in Jagatsinghpur, police sources said today.
The deceased was identified as Sagar Nayak, the son of Sukadev Nayak from Charibatia.
The accused has been identified as Pratap Behera, the son of Madhu Behera from the same village. He attacked the victim with the help of his aide Dilu Samal, the son of Bansidhar Samal from Mahira village of the district. Sagar and Pratap used to work as drivers and both were friends. They had an altercation over a matter. Things took an ugly turn when, in a fit of rage, the accused duo attacked Sagar following a brawl. “It was a sudden provocation and Pratap fled from the spot soon after committing the crime,” Jagatsinghpur SDPO said.
According to the SDPO, at around 9.30 pm, Sukadev saw that his son Sagar was lying in a pool of blood at Kadamba Chhak near his house. He immediately took the injured to a hospital where doctors declared Sagar as ‘brought dead’.
The actual reason behind the alleged killing has not been ascertained yet.
Acting on an FIR lodged by Sukadev, a case (No-550/2023) has been registered at Jagatsinghpur PS and a probe initiated. Police have apprehended Pratap and his aide Dilu, who are being interrogated.
“Sagar’s death is the fallout of past enmity. He and Dilu were on bad terms with each other and had a scuffle in the evening. Later at night, we all had our dinner and went to sleep. Sagar told me that he was going to the nearby Chhack for a stroll. Dilu and Pratap were present somewhere there and attacked my son,” the deceased’s mother stated.
“Dilu had thrown a stone at my head around 10 years ago over a matter and I sustained severe injuries. He was often threatening to take revenge again,” the elderly woman added.
