1 killed, another injured in separate jumbo attacks in Odisha

Angul/Dhenkanal: One person was killed and another one sustained injuries in two separate incidents of elephant attack in Dhenkanal and Angul districts today.

The deceased person has been identified as Maguni Behera (50), a resident of Bajrakot village under Rengali police limits in Kaniha Block of Angul district.

The person, who received injuries in another incident, has been identified as Sananta Nayak (75), a resident of Meramandali village under Motunga police limits in Dhenkanal district.

According to reports, an elephant attacked Maguni while he had been to a pond near his house to attend nature’s call at around 5.00 am today. His family members rushed him to the Kaniha CHC (Community Health Centre) in critical condition, where he succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment.

On receiving information, Kaniha forest department officials reached the deceased person’s house and assured the kin for compensation amount of Rs 4 lakh. The district administration has provided Rs 40,000 as assistance to his family for last rites.

In another incident, a septuagenarian became victim after he stumbled upon an elephant while he had gone outside his house for defecation in the morning. The 75-year-old man of Meramandali village sustained critical injuries after allegedly being attacked by a jumbo.

The injured Sananta is currently undergoing treatment at a government hospital in Meramandali, informed Dhenkanal DFO Prakash Chand Gogineni.
