12 Odias succumb to COVID-19 in Gujarat in last 10 days

Berhampur: With the COVID-19 situation deteriorating throughout the country in the second phase, the number of patients succumbing to the virus has also increased. Reportedly, an average of 500 people are dying due to the virus every day in the recent past.

Amidst this, 12 Odias have lost their lives in the battle against COVID-19 in Gujarat in last 10 days , informed Odia migrants staying in Gujarat. On April 7, the husband of Gangadharpur Gram Panchayat’s former Sarpanch succumbed to the virus, informed his family sources.

“He was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Surat for last five days and over Rs 3 lakh  was spent on his treatment. But he later succumbed to the deadly virus,” said a family member.

Describing how grave the situation has become in Gujarat, he said, “We reached the crematorium there at 11 AM the same day to perform his last rites. But the cremation was done late at 6 PM as the site was already crowded.”

Sources said hospitals in the state are running out of beds to provide treatment to COVID-19 patients. The 12 Odias, who died of COVID-19 in Gujarat include, three in Pandesara area and four in Amroli area in the state.

It is pertinent to mention here that highly-infected Gujarat yesterday recorded 4,021 fresh cases, highest single-day spike so far.
