12 Odisha dists put on alert as Hirakud releases floodwater

Sambalpur, Aug 4:

Odisha’s Hirakud Dam will release the first floodwater of this season tomorrow between 10 AM and 12.30 PM, said an official of the Water Resources department.

Collectors of 12 districts have been put on alert, he added.

“Tentatively six to ten sluice gates will be opened. In case we open ten gates, the outflow will be 1.5 lakh cusec per hour and there is no possibility of floods downstream of Mahanadi. However, we would like to inform people residing on the banks of Mahanadi and its distributaries that due to the release of floods water level will rise. We would request them to remain on alert to avoid any untoward incident,” informed Pradip Jena, Principal Secretary Water Resources department to reporters here today.

Collectors of Sambalpur, Bargarh, Subarnapur, Angul, Boudh, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Kandhamal, Khordha, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur and Puri have been asked to remain on alert, said an official.
