Basu Suman, a 4th year Mechanical Engineering student of the Institute of Technical Education and Research (ITER), the faculty of engineering of Odisha’s SOA University, was today presented the best student award for the current year by the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) for his all-round achievement in academics and extra-curricular activity.

tcs-awardKushal Banerjee, Academic Relationship Manager, India (East) of TCS, presented the award to Suman at a program held in ITER in the presence of the Dean of the institute, Prof PK Sahu and Associate Dean Dr RK Hota.

Separate awards were also presented on behalf of ITER to Jagyan Mohapatra, Ankit Bhargav, Prateek Pattnaik, Debasish Dash, Anurag Kirti and Divakar, on the occasion for their leadership and contribution in several other areas including social action, creative art, literary flair and blood donation etc.

In a presentation as to how they should prepare for interviews, Mr. Banerjee told the students that they should be ready to face different kind of situations after joining a company. “In the college, you may complain that some of the questions in exam were from areas which were not in the syllabus. But you can’t tell a client that the work he wants you to do can’t be done. In the industry, nothing is out of syllabus,” he said.

While appearing in an interview, a person should have a strategy, he said adding “you have to think through expected questions, organise your thoughts and be prepared with questions.” The interviewers try to assess a fresher from college from the point of performance, behavior and competence.

Pointing out that attitude comprised 40 per cent of the rating during assessment, Banerjee said job skills and qualification (25 per cent), communication—verbal and nonverbal (25 per cent) and image and appearance (10 per cent) of a person followed in that order during recruitment exercises.
