Bhubaneswar: At least 13 persons reportedly lost vision partially after undergoing cataract surgery at a private clinic in Odisha's Angul district, last week. The affected patients were later admitted to VIMSAR in Burla for treatment.
Reports indicate that the 13 persons, including five women from Banarpal and Athmallik, had cataract surgery at the clinic on June 20. Initially, all of them seemed to recover well within the first 24 hours. However, they soon began experiencing severe pain, headaches, and vision loss.
The patients were then shifted to VIMSAR on June 22 for further treatment.
"While 13 patients were admitted, many of them have been discharged after treatment. However, their vision remains compromised. The reason behind such incident was yet to be ascertained," said Lalmohan Nayak, superintendent of VIMSAR.
On the other hand, police have sealed the private clinic in the presence of officials of the district administration.
Angul CDMO Sibananda Mohanty said an investigation has been initiated into the matter and stringent action will be taken against those found guilty.
