Bhubaneswar: Mohan Charan Majhi, the four-time MLA from Keonjhar Assembly seat, today took oath as the first Chief Minister from BJP in Odisha.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) defeated the Naveen Patnaik-led Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in the just concluded Assembly polls in the state. The BJP has won at least 78 Assembly seats of the total 147 in Odisha while candidates of BJD came victorious in 51 constituencies.

Governor Raghubar Das administered the oaths of office and secrecy to Majhi, a tribal leader, at a ceremony at Janata Maidan in the capital city here.

A 15-member Council of Ministers including two Deputy Chief Ministers—KV Singh Deo and Pravati Parida—were also sworn in on the occasion.

Majhi (52) was elected as the leader of the BJP legislature party in Odisha at a meeting of the newly-elected MLAs of the party in the city here yesterday. Soon after his election as the leader of BJP legislature party, Majhi along with other leaders of the party met the Governor and staked claims to form the next government in the state.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was present at the ceremony, congratulated the new Chief Minister of Odisha and his Council of Ministers.

Dignitaries including Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP national president and Union Health Minister JP Nadda, Union Minister for Highways Nitin Gadkari, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Puskar Singh Dhami, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, and former Chief Minister and BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik were present on the occasion.

The BJP came to the power in Odisha on its own after it won the majority Assembly seats in the state in the 2024 polls.
