2 days after abduction, Visva Bharati PhD student rescued from Talasari beach in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: A PhD student of Visva Bharati, who was allegedly abducted by some unknown people from Birbhum district of West Bengal on September 21, was rescued from Talasari beach in Odisha’s Balasore district today.

Around 12 people from West Bengal had abducted a PhD student of Visva Bharati, identified as Panchara Thai of Myanmar, from near his rented accommodation outside the varsity campus on September 21, said an official of Odisha police.

The abductors brought the PhD student to Talasari beach on the same day. Seven of the abductors had retuned West Bengal while the remaining five were with the PhD student, he added.

“On being informed by the West Bengal police, we have rescued the PhD scholar and captured the five abductors. All of them have been handed over to West Bengal police. We are now trying the find out the reason behind the abduction and whether any gang is involved in the incident,” said the official.

The PhD student went missing from near his rented accommodation outside Visva Bharati in the afternoon of September 21. The varsity authorities had lodged a complaint in this regard with police, sources said.

Later, another student of the varsity informed the authorities that some people came to the PhD student’s rented accommodation in a car and took him away, sources added.
