Baripada: Two women of a family were killed on the spot and three more sustained grievous injuries as the ill-fated car in which they were travelling got trapped between two trucks and later crushed while negotiating a turning at Dwarasuni Ghat of Bangiriposi block on NH-49 in Mayurbhanj, today.
The identity of the two deceased women who happened to be sisters-in-law has not been ascertained yet.
According to a source, seven members of a family were on their way back home when they met with an accident in the afternoon. The two women, their husbands and three children were in the car. They hail from Kharagpur of neighbouring West Bengal.
The two couples and their children had come to Odisha to pay their obeisance to Goddess Dwarasuni on the occasion of Dussehra. When the car was passing by a stationary truck that had met with an accident earlier in the day, the vehicle slowed to give way to another truck coming from the front. However, a third iron ore-laden truck hit the car from behind leaving it severely mangled and leading to the untimely deaths of the two women.
“The two women were sitting on the rear seat; hence got crushed,” an eyewitness stated.
Five others of the family had a close shave as they were sitting in the front seat, the eyewitness added.
On being informed, a team of police and local fire services personnel reached the spot and rescued the injured and sent them to a hospital in Bangiriposi for treatment.
Police have seized the truck that caused the accident and launched a probe into the mishap.
“The two truck drivers fled from the spot soon after the accident,” a senior policeman said.
