2 students injured after ceiling fan falls on them during exam in Odisha’s Cuttack

Following the incident, there was widespread anger among guardians and students who alleged that poor maintenance and upkeep of the college is putting lives of students at risk and led to the mishap.

Athagarh: In a shocking incident, two students suffered injuries after a ceiling fan fell on them during an exam in Gopabandhu Science College of Athagarh in Odisha’s Cuttack district here today. Though the identities of the students have not been revealed yet, preliminary investigation revealed that the both of them were Plus II first year Arts students.

As per reports, the mishap took place when Odia exam was being conducted in of the classrooms. The students were appearing for the test when the ceiling fan fell on two of them, injuring one on the head and the other on the neck. College authorities immediately rushed them to Athagarh hospital where the injured victims were given first aid. After the treatment, they went back and resumed the test.

Following the incident, there was widespread anger among guardians and students who alleged that poor maintenance and upkeep of the college is putting lives of students at risk and led to the mishap. However, chairman of the college committee Lokanath Sahu said the fans had been recently repaired. “All fans were checked and the repairs done under the supervision of one of the English lecturers just 15 days back. The electrician who retired three years back occasionally comes and does regular checking. We don’t know how the incident happened. An investigation will be initiated and action will be taken against those responsible for any lapse found. We will also replace all the fans and ensure regular maintenance,” he added.
