2,176 newborns died in April-June this year in Odisha: Minister

Bhubaneswar: As many as 2,176 newborns died in the first three months of current financial year. This was stated by Health and Family Welfare Minister Naba Kishore Das in the State Assembly today.

Replying to a query from Khandapada MLA Soumya Ranjan Patnaik, the health minister said of the total newborn deaths in the first quarter, 682 died in KBK districts.

Patnaik wanted to know how many newborns of malnourished mothers had died within four weeks after their birth and what steps have been taken to address the issue. The legislator also stated that 3,045 newborns had died in the first three months of the fiscal and around 61% infant deaths were reported from KBK districts.

The State government has budgeted Rs 33,736.11 lakh for welfare of pregnant women under National Health Mission (NHM)-Progarmme Implementation Plan (PIP), the minister informed the Assembly.
