3,184 rape cases registered in Odisha in 2022: White Paper

Bhubaneswar: As many as 1,78,190 criminal cases were registered in Odisha in 2022, said a White Paper released by the Home department today.

Altogether 1,379 murder cases and 3,184 rape cases were registered in the state in 2022, added the White paper.

A total of 626 cases of dacoity, 2,998 cases of robbery, 5,467 cases of burglary, 14,893 cases of theft, 5,352 cases of cheating, 2,248 cases of riot, 11,773 cases of motor vehicle accident and 1,30,380 miscellaneous cases were registered in Odisha last year, added the White Paper.

The police have filed the chargesheets in 1,18,547 criminal cases out of the total 1,78,190 cases, claimed the White Paper.

Chargesheets have been filed in 640 murder cases out of the total 1,379. Similarly, the police have filed chargesheets in 2,237 rape cases out of the total 3,184 till the end of 2022, it added.

According to the White Paper, altogether 1,983 cyber crime cases were registered in Odisha in 2022. As many as 441 accused persons have been arrested in connection with cyber crimes in the state.

“The state witnessed a decline in Maoist activities in 2022. A total of 27 cases of Maoist violence registered in the state last year. At least seven Maoists were eliminated and 12 others were arrested in police action in 2022. Three Maoists have laid down the arms. At least eight civilians were killed and three security personnel were martyred in Left Wing Extremism (LWE) in Odisha last year,” said the White Paper.

However, there was no incident of political violence and communalism was reported in the state in 2022, claimed the White Paper.

“The overall law and order situation in Odisha remained peaceful throughout the year. The three-tier panchayat and urban local body (ULB) elections were conducted in a peaceful manner in the state in 2022,” said the White Paper.
