33 persons arrested in illegal cough syrup trade in Odisha

The accused, most of whom belong to Bargarh, Cuttack and Balagir districts in Odisha and Uttar Pradesh, were reportedly part of an organised inter-State racket involving illegal procurement, transportation and selling of Eskuf Syrup from Cuttack to Balangir. 

Balangir: In a major crackdown, police arrested as many as 33 persons for their alleged involvement in illegal cough syrup trade in Balangir district of Odisha here today. The accused, most of whom belong to Bargarh, Cuttack and Balagir districts in Odisha and Uttar Pradesh, were reportedly part of an organised inter-State racket involving illegal procurement, transportation and selling of Eskuf Syrup from Cuttack to Balangir.

Besides the arrest, police also recovered 12,960 Eskuf Syrup bottles whose estimated worth is around Rs 35 lakh, one country made pistol, 17 mobile phones, one Mahindra XUV Vehicle, two Mahindra Pick UP, one Tata ACE Vehicle, two motorcycles and cash of Rs. 7,500 besides gold jewelry and other articles.

Official sources informed that an amount of nearly Rs 2 crore has been freezed by Police of supplier
company namely M/s. Daffodil Drugs Pvt. Ltd based in Kolkota, West Bengal.

According to Balangir Town Police, the accused were active in Balangir and bordering districts and trading Eskuf syrup from Cuttack to Balangir by importing the same from Kolkata, West Bengal. They were apprehended basing on the local, human and technical intelligence and evidences gathering during investigation. Probe also revealed that all of them have committed similar type of offences in the locality and in other bordering district in the state.

After getting reliable tip-off, a special team  comprising Inspectors K Priyanka Routray and Srikant Sahu, Sun-inspectors Kiran Kumar Jani and Rakesh Behera and a team of Cyber Cell and DVF constables carried out a raid and nabbed the accused. Further investigation is underway and others involved in the racket will be nabbed soon, police said.
