33% seats for women a tribute to Gandhiji: Odisha CM

Bhubaneswar: Allocation of 33% seats for women in elections will be a humble tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary, opined Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today.

Taking to Twitter, Patnaik also said that Gandhiji was a great votary of Women Empowerment and advocated higher representation for women in legislative bodies.

The BJD supremo had recently announced that one-third of the party candidates for parliamentary constituencies would be women in the upcoming General Elections. Besides, Patnaik has been advocating for 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and State Assemblies. He has also urged all national & regional political parties and all chief ministers to extend their support in this regard.

Last year, the Odisha Government had passed a resolution in the State Assembly to provide 33 per cent reservation to women in both Parliament and State legislatures. This apart, Patnaik had in 2012 enhanced the reservation for women from 33 per cent to 50 per cent in the panchayat elections and urban bodies.
