Malkangiri: Police have arrested as many as 36 persons over their alleged involvement in killing a home guard in Odisha’s Malkangiri district.
The accused were arrested from Nabarangpur and Kotpad areas while efforts were on by cops to trace and apprehend others involved in the case.
Home guard Banabasi Maharana was allegedly hacked to death by a group of ganja smugglers near Chaulimendi under Balimela police limits in the district on September 5 night.
More than 100 persons disguised as kanwariyas were carrying the contraband using slings. Acting on a tip-off, police intercepted them near Chaulimendi for search. The accused attacked the cops, during which Maharana was grievously injured. The wrongdoers fled the spot after assaulting the cops.
The victim was rescued and rushed to the Mathili Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
