4 dead, 5 more injured in separate incidents of road mishap in Odisha districts

Nuapada/Bolangir/Koida: Two women and two men were killed today and five more sustained grievous injuries in separate incidents of road mishap in Nuapada, Bolangir, and Sundargarh districts.

In the first incident, two persons died as a Hyva truck hit the motorcycle on which they were travelling near Mendhatala village under Lakhan police limits in Nuapada. The two deceased are a woman and her paternal uncle (father’s elder brother), a police source said.

In the second incident, a woman was killed and her husband became critical after they met with an accident near Chandanbhati college under Sadar police limits of Bolangir. The couple was on their way back from a church when their scooter was hit by a Hyva truck.

The third incident was reported from Chunaghati on NH-520 under K Balang police limits and Bonai subdivision in Sundargarh district, today evening.

A speeding mineral-laden truck, which was on its way from Koida hit another stationary truck from behind leading to the death. The driver of the stationary truck died in the incident and four others sustained injuries.

Worth mentioning, Odisha Government yesterday came up with a standard operating procedure (SOP) for the Zero Fatality Week that started on December 1 to prevent deaths due to road accidents. The SOP contains the roles and responsibilities of different State government Departments.

As per the SOP, Police and Regional Transport Officers (RTOs) have been asked to launch special enforcement drives against drunk driving and wrong-route driving, including other traffic violations.
