4 women hurt as country-made gun goes off in weekly haat in Odisha village

Sources said one Budu Majhi of Pujariguda village had taken his country gun for repair to a welding shop near the weekly market in Maidalpur under Papadahandi block  of the district. However, while the gun was being fixed, it suddenly went off injuring the four women who happened to be in the vicinity.

Maidalpur/Nabaragpur: Panic prevailed after as many as four women suffered injuries as a country gun exploded in a weekly market in Papadahandi block of Nabarangpur district of Odisha today. The injured victims were identified as Sabita Maali (35) of Maidalpur, Phularida Kachim of Betagharana village, Tulasi Pujari of Niladriguda and Mukta Jani of Dangariguda.

Sources said one Budu Majhi of Pujariguda village had taken his country gun for repair to a welding shop near the weekly market in Maidalpur under Papadahandi block  of the district. However, while the gun was being fixed, it suddenly went off injuring the four women who happened to be in the vicinity.

While Sabita suffered gun shot wounds in her hand and stomach and Tulasi in her leg and chest, Phularida and Mukta’s hands were injured. The owner of the gun Jani too was hurt in the explosion. Following the incident, fear gripped locals and commotion prevailed in the haat. Locals meanwhile called the 108 ambulance and rushed the injured women to Maidalpur primary health centre where they are currently being treated.

Police on the other hand has detained Jani and the owner of the welding shop besides seizing the gun.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the country gun had been seized by the Forest department 10 years back in a wild board poaching case and Jani had recovered it on the day itself. Further probe is underway and a case has been registered.
