5 held in army jawan death case in Odisha’s Ganjam

Bhubaneswar: The police today claimed to have arrested five persons in connection with the death of an army jawan in Ganjam district of Odisha recently.

Chamakhandi police in Ganjam have arrested J. Kalyani Patra, CH Sekhar and B. Cheneya of Kalipalli village and B. Bulu Patra and CH Biki Kumar Patra of Nimakhandi in connection with the death of military personnel J. Dileshwar Patra, said Ganjam SP Jagmohan Meena.

The police have seized two bikes and equal number of mobile phones from the accused, added the SP.

Patra, a resident of Kalipalli in Ganjam, had reached home on leave a few days ago.

He along with his friends had gone to watch a cricket match in Gopalpur area of Ganjam on December 3.

An argument ensued between Patra and a few youths over some issues during the cricket match, sources said.

Some miscreants allegedly intercepted Patra near Haripur Square and attacked him with sharp weapons while he was returning home after the cricket match. Patra sustained grievous injuries on his head, face and other parts of the body in the attack, sources added.

Patra was immediately rushed to hospital in Berhampur city in a critical condition and he was later shifted to a health institute in Odisha capital here after his condition deteriorated. He died while being treated on December 6.

The police had registered case in this regard and launched a probe.
