5 killed, 9 injured in separate incidents of lightning strikes in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: At least five persons died and nine others sustained injuries in separate incidents of lightning strikes in Bhadrak and Balasore districts of Odisha today.

Two persons were killed and three others were injured in three separate incidents of lightning strikes in Chandabali area of Bhadrak district.

Ghumuna Singh, a labourer from Mayurbhanj, was killed due to lightning while she was working on a paddy field at Singiti village of Utukuda panchayat in Bhadrak. Ghumuna’s daughter Sima was injured in the incident sources said.

Similarly, Pratap Majhi, son of Prafulla Majhi, of Kherang panchayat was killed when lightning struck him in the afternoon. This apart, Dhaneswar Barik and Sumant Sahu of Maisudha panchayat were injured in lightning strike and rushed to Bhadrak District Headquarters Hospital (DHH), sources said.

According to sources, three villagers died and six others sustained critical injuries due to lightning strikes in Basta area of Balasore in the afternoon. The identities of the deceased are yet to be known.
