“We are poor people. We have no earnings. The sardar had promised to get us work and food. The measly amount we get as daily wages here is not enough. I neither have a son nor anybody to look after me. I have to earn my livelihood,” said Mugi Majhi, a female labourer who has been rescued.

The police have arrested two middlemen in this connection. They have been identified as Sadanand Herna of Khaprakhol area and Ajit Behera of Jogibandh area in Balangir district. These two middlemen had planned to take these men, women and children to Andhra Pradesh or Tamil Nadu to work as labourers, police said.

“We have arrested the two agents who had trapped these people and were taking them to some unknown destination by promising them higher wages. They haven’t provided them with any money or food. We have rescued these 51 people among whom are women and children. We have registered a case against these people. We have nabbed that Sadanand Herna, he is a cheat,” said Rabindra Kumar Patra IIC Patnagarh police station.
