51,426 comm vehicles operating without fitness in Odisha

As many as 51,426 commercial vehicles have been found operating without fitness certificates in the past two years in Odisha, said Transport Minister Ramesh Majhi to the Assembly replying to a question of MLAs Dillip Ray and Amar Prasad Satpathy yesterday.

Out of the 51,426 vehicles, while 17,322 have been found under Bhubaneswar Regional Transport Office (RTO), Sambalpur RTO comes a close second with 16,549 vehicles.

A whopping 1,122 buses were found operating across the state without a fitness certificates or route permit. While 621 of them were found operating in Puri, Cuttack and Deogarh trailed with 110 each, said Minister Majhi.

“The State Government has collected Rs 373 crore as fine from vehicle owners in the past two years,” he added.

It may be noted here that as per the existing rules of the government, commercial vehicles come with a two year fitness certificate on purchase. This certificate needs to be renewed every year after that.

The Minister, however, denied having any information about commercial vehicles declared unfit in other states plying on the roads of Odisha. He said so replying to a question of Congress Chief Whip Tara Prasad Bahinipati.
