521 heritage signage in Odisha capital soon

Odisha Sun Times Bureau
Bhubaneswar, Dec 20:

The Ekamra Kshetra which was known as the Heritage District of Odisha in the past, will soon have 521 heritage signage to go in sync with the beautiful monuments and other ancient structures, which are presently dotted with normal signage, often found as a gross mismatch to our unique architectural style and the essence of the Kalingan Temple building norms.

While the Heritage Cell of the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) has done the research and ground work for the design and documentation of the signage project, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) will erect the new signage. The Odisha Mining Corporation will finance the project to develop the heritage signage process, in which an investment of more than Rs 2.75 crore is to be made by the mining major, informed a BMC official.

BMC has initiated the tendering process for heritage signage for engaging firms to develop it and it would be completed within six month from the date of commencement of work, he added.

The heritage monuments are our USP and the State Capital is known for them and also referred to as the Temple City. However, the signage are not carrying the similar sense of aesthetics, which should go along with these historic structures nearby. So the purpose of this project is to have clear, concise information which is relevant, aesthetically pleasing and consistent for all sites.

This, on the other hand, will help promote a unified and attractive appearance for all facilities and eliminate inconsistent, ineffective, and unnecessary signs. The Heritage Cell of BDA has provided the guidelines for signage design for these proposed 521 sites in Ekamra Kshetra, keeping with its heritage value and providing a consistency in height, scale, material, colour and design.

The theme for each of the signage design has evolved basing on the Kalingan Style of temple architecture incorporating specific elements of Shilpa Sashtra. For narrow lanes of the City Core design considerations have been made accordingly and infused into the entire process of the signage planning.
