59 cases of H3N2 influenza detected in Odisha: RMRC

Bhubaneswar: At least 59 cases of H3N2 influenza have been detected in Odisha in last two months, said Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC)-Bhubaneswar Director Sanghamitra Pati here today.

Altogether 225 samples from across Odisha were tested for H3N2 at the RMRC-Bhubaneswar in January and February this year, out of which 59 samples were found positive for the influenza, Pati said.

So far, 3,038 laboratory-confirmed H3N2 influenza cases have been reported from across the country.

“Young children and old persons with co-morbidities are the most vulnerable groups for seasonal influenza. So far, Karnataka and Haryana have confirmed one death each from H3N2 influenza,” said a senior official of the Health Ministry Yesterday.

The H3N2 influenza has similar symptoms like Covid-19. People suffering from the influenza will have fever, cough and chest pain. Some patients may face respiratory complications, said the experts.

Seasonal influenza is an acute respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses which circulate in all parts of the world. The cases often go up globally in certain months of a year. India witnesses two peaks of seasonal influenza: one from January to March and the other in the post monsoon season every year, added the experts.
