Berhampur: The police busted a gold and silver jewellery smuggling racket in Berhampur town in Ganjam district today evening. A total of six kg gold jewellery and 239 kg silver jewellery were seized from a vehicle in Gosani Nuagaon area of the town and three held by the police for questioning.

Today evening a police team was frisking vehicles on Andhapasara road under Gosani Nuagaon police limits. A car bearing registration number – TN 90 D 8116 came from Haladiapadar over bridge side and stopped at the check point.

The police searched the car and found bags containing gold and silver jewellery. After three youths occupying the car failed to produce the required documents, the police detained the trio for questioning.

A police official said preliminary investigation shows the three youths travelled in the car from Tamil Nadu. As the three occupants of the car failed to produce necessary documents, it is suspected they were smuggling the six kg gold and 400 kg silver jewellery in the vehicle into Berhampur town to evade tax .
