6 labourers killed after being run over by goods train in Odisha’s Jajpur

Bhubaneswar: Six labourers reportedly died after they were run over by a goods train at Jajpur Road railway station in Odisha today.

Two others also sustained critical injuries in the incident. The incident occurred when the labourers were taking shelter under the stationary goods train during Nor’wester rain in the locality in the afternoon, locals said.

“The labourers were run over by the train after it moved suddenly,” they added.

Sources, meanwhile, claimed that the bogies of a goods train were stationary at Jajpur Road railway station. The bogies moved due to gusty winds during the Nor’wester rain.

The deceased have been identified as Manas Samal, Goutam Samal, Susanta Jena, Dolagobinda Pradhan, Vimsen Jena and Prashant Jena, sources said.

“A private contractor had engaged the labourers to carry out some railway work at Jajpur-Keonjhar road station,” said an official of East Coast Railway.

The incident took place a few days after the death of 288 passengers in a major train mishap in Balasore district of Odisha on June 2. Over 1,000 passengers also sustained injuries in the mishap.
