Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Assembly Elections-2024 were filled with major upsets. While the BJP dethroned the BJD to form government in the state for the first time, 63 MLAs failed to win in their respective constituencies.
As many as 52 such MLAs are from the BJD, eight from the BJP, and one from the Congress. Similarly, two independent MLAs were unable to retain their seats.
The MLAs of the BJD who faced defeat in the elections are Jagannath Nayak, Pranab Kumar Balabantray, Nrusingha Charan Sahu, Sushant Kumar Behera, Sudhir Kumar Samal, Mukesh Pal, Sanand Marandi, Swaroop Kumar Das, Prafulla Samal, Bishnubrata Routray, Rohit Pujari, Debesh Acharya, Dibyashankar Mishra, Dipali Das, Alaka Mohanty, Snehangini Chhuria, Sushant Singh, Mahidhar Rana, Padmanabha Behera, Saroj Meher, Raghuram Padal, Prabhu Jani, Prafulla Pangi, Manjula Swain, Subash Chandra Behera, Vikram Panda, Latika Pradhan, Suryamani Baidya, Srikant Sahu, Debi Prasad Mishra, Chandra Sarathi Behera, Pramod Mallick, Prashant Muduli, Rajendra Sahu, Satya Narayan Pradhan, Rudra Pratap Maharathy, and Umakant Samantray.
More shockingly, BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik, who contested from both Hinjili and Kantabanji, lost in Kantabanji.
Eight BJP MLAs Kusum Tete, Subash Mahapatra, Pradeepta Nayak, Jayant Sarangi, K. Narayan Rao, Nauri Nayak, Shankar Oram, and Bhavani Shankar Bhoi lost the polls.
Other notable candidates who lost were Sukanta Nayak who switched from BJP to BJD, Aravind Dhali who moved from BJD to BJP, and independent candidates Soumya Ranjan Patnaik and Sudhanshu Shekhar Parida. Former MP Mahesh Sahu, who contested for assembly seat, also faced defeat.
Congress' Santosh Singh Saluja lost in Kantabanji assembly seat.
