8 killed as bus carrying migrant labourers from Odisha meets with accident in Raipur

Bhubaneswar:  At least eight migrants were killed while several others suffered injuries after the bus they were travelling in from Ganjam in Odisha met with a severe road mishap at Chherikhedi in Raipur of neighbouring Chhattisgarh in wee hours today.

Sources said the bus carrying migrants from Ganjam district was en-route to Surat in Gujarat  collided with a truck near Chherikhedi at around 3.30 AM. The injured have been rushed to hospital for treatment, sources said.

The remaining 59 labours are safe and under care of Raipur administration. A team of Odisha police under Padampur SDPO is rushing to Raipur to assist cops there, informed DGP Abhay, who has been directed by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to remain in touch with Chhattisgarh counterparts for coordination.

“As per the CM’s direction, we are in touch with senior officers of Chhattisgarh police. The injured persons are being treated in Raipur Medical College Hospital. Post-mortem of eight bodies will be done soon,” said the DGP.

Meanwhile, the CM expressed deep grief over the deaths and announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the next of the kin of the deceased and free medical treatment for the injured.
