75th Independence Day: Watch these top movies portraying India’s freedom struggle

Bhubaneswar: With the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ initiative and several musical tributes, India’s revelry on the occasion of its 75th year of Independence is only getting started.

Amidst its battle with Covid-19 pandemic and the latest threat posed by several monkeypox cases in the states, India is beyond motivated to celebrate its 75th year of independence; digitally, if not physically.

So, what better and safer way to celebrate the spirits of patriotism than watching or re-watching some epic movies that portray pictures of a pre-independent India and its journey to the independence!

  • The Legend of Bhagat Singh

This biographical movie based on the life of young freedom fighter and revolutionary Bhagat Singh was a Rajkumar Satoshi directorial released in 2002. Actor Ajay Devgn who played Bhagat Singh in the movie, later received his second National Award for his role in the movie.

 

  • Lagaan

This 2001 Ashutosh Gowariker movie portrays glimpses of the pre-independent India. It features Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh as the main characters, along with an elaborate caste of actors.  It narrates how a group of villagers accepted the challenge of defeating British officials in their own game ‘cricket’ in order to get a tax waiver.

 

  • Mangal Pandey

This 2005 release was based on the life of an Indian soldier Mangal Pandey. The Ketan Mehta directorial starred Aamir Khan, Ammesha Patel and Rani Mukherjee in lead roles. Later, it was premiered at the Cannes film festival.

 

  • Gandhi

Released in 1982, the biographical movie cast English actor Ben Kingsley as Mahatma Gandhi. The Richard Attenborough directorial received 11 nominations at the 55th academy awards.

 

 

  • Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi

This 2019 release period drama narrated the life of queen of Jhansi Rani Laxmibai who led the battle against the British. Actress Kangana Ranaut played the lead role in the movie and co-directed it with Krish Jagarlamudi.
