Prof Srikrishna Deva Rao to be new VC of NLU in Odisha

The Odisha government has accorded its concurrence to the proposal to appoint well-known academician Prof. (Dr) Srikrishna Deva Rao as the vice-chancellor of National Law University (NLU), Cuttack.

The proposal for Prof Rao’s appointment had come from the Chancellor of NLU and Chief Justice of the Odisha High Court.

Odisha Higher Education secretary GK Dhal has informed the NLU Chancellor about  the state government’s concurrence to the appointment of Prof Rao, who is now the Registrar of NLU, Delhi.

He will replace Prof. (Mrs.) Priyambada Mohanty Hejmadi.

Prof Rao was the founding Director of School of Law, IGNOU and headed the institution from May 2, 2007 to May 1, 2010. He holds a Master’s degree in Law from Kakatiya University, Master of Philosophy in Law from National Law School(NLS), Bangalore and PhD from the Delhi University (DU).

He has worked with three National Law Schools in India; Bangalore, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad, in addition to a short stint at DU and the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

Prof Rao is also the founding faculty of NALSAR, Hyderabad and Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar.

He was a consultant to the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Swedish Development Cooperation (SDC), Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT), Child Rights and You (CRY) and Swedish National Science Foundation (SNSF). His areas of specialisation include Criminal Law, Human Rights, Community Legal Education and Law, Science and Technology.

“The government will notify about his tenure within a few days,” said an official of Higher Education department.

The NLU, Cuttack, a sprawling 50 acre campus, is offering B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) , B.B.A. LL.B. (Hons.),  LLM (Corporate Commercial Laws) and PhD (Law) and PhD (Interdisciplinary). The University plans to offer M.Phil courses from this year.
