ABVP members scuffle with police near Odisha min’s residence

Bhubaneswar: Members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) today scuffled with police in front of the residence of Higher Education Minister Arun Sahoo in Odisha capital.

The incident took place when the ABVP activists were staging protest before the minister’s residence opposing cancellation of students’ union poll in degree colleges and state universities across Odisha.

Policemen deployed at the spot tried to disperse the agitators when the latter attempted to gherao the minister’s residence, and subsequently a scuffle broke out between the cops and ABVP members. Later, around 50 activists were taken into preventive custody.

Worth mentioning, students’ union poll in degree colleges and state universities across Odisha will not be held this year. A decision in this regard has been taken by the Higher Education Department.

Instead of election, a decision has been taken for nomination of students’ representatives to various bodies of universities/colleges.
