Balasore/Cuttack: A woman named Banita Singh, who was attacked with acid on February 20 by her husband, succumbed to severe injuries today while undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) in Cuttack.

The victim woman belonged to Bhimpura village located under Sahadevkhunta police limits on the outskirts of Balasore town in this district. She was earlier shifted from Balasore district headquarters hospital (DHH) to SCBMCH for treatment after her condition deteriorated. She was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital.

A probe into the incident is underway and police have not yet nabbed the accused, who is absconding.

According to a senior police official, the 20-year-old woman and younger daughter of Kartik Singh from Bhimpura village had a love affair with Chandan Kumar Rana from Nayapatana village in the district.

Chandan is a local goldsmith and was doing business in nearby villages. He used to move from door to door for this purpose. Both Banita and Chandan got married one and a half months ago.

A few days after her marriage, Banita came to know that Chandan had married another woman.

This issue led to an altercation between the couple. Things took an ugly turn when in a fit of rage, Chandan poured acid on Banita leaving her severely injured on the intervening day.

The elder sister of Banita and the former’s two kids had also sustained injuries in the acid attack.
