Acute drinking water crisis in Hudhud-hit areas of Odisha’s Koraput district

With power supply yet to be restored to most of the water supply stations in the areas hit by Cyclone Hudhud, tribals in remote areas of Odisha’s Koraput district are facing an acute shortage of safe drinking water.

Thirty out of 348 piped water supply stations of the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation (RWSS) in the district have stopped functioning in the wake of Hudhud, said RWSS sources in Koraput district. Piped water supply can be resumed only after power supply is restored to the water supply stations, sources added.

Officials said eight tankers and 16 mobile vans with water-tanks have been engaged to supply water to villagers till normalcy is restored in the supply of piped water.

RWSS sources, however, admitted that water tankers are unable to reach many of these remotely located areas due to the absence of proper motorable roads .

People in remote villages have been advised to use watre from tube wells till water supply is restored, they said adding that roadside villages are being supplied water through tankers.
