Bhubaneswar: A day after Odisha's ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) opposed the proposed water aerodrome project at Chilika, BJP's Rourkela MLA Dilip Ray today said the project would adversely affect the ecosystem of the region.

Taking to Facebook, the legislator said, "When noise pollution generated by the thousands of mechanized boats operating in the region has already taken a toll on the endangered Irrawaddy Dolphins, the flagship species of Chilika Lagoon, the introduction of amphibious aircraft will further worsen the situation."

This apart, the lake being a temporary habitat for lakhs of migratory birds, the safety of the passengers will also be at risk as there will be high chances of the birds being hit by the low flying aircraft, he said.

"If at all, any advancement is made in this project, the fragile ecosystem of regions of the lake such as Nalabana Island (Bird Sanctuary) and Satapada Islands (home to Irrawaddy dolphins), at best, should not be disturbed," Ray advised.

"Any advancement in the proposal to set up water aerodrome in the Chilika lagoon should be made after doing a thorough study of its benefits and ecological consequences. Any projects aimed at boosting tourism in the State should be welcomed but at the same time, it has to be ensured that a balanced harmony with nature is maintained," he concluded.

Worth mentioning, BJD's Brahmagiri MLA Sanjay Das Burma had yesterday opposed the project saying that it would affect the biodiversity.

In response, BJP leader and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had said that opposing the water aerodrome is against the interests of the state and its youths.

Notably, the Ministry of Civil Aviation on August 10 approved the water aerodrome projects at Chilika in Odisha and Sardar Sarovar Project in Gujarat in the first phase.
