After one year of love marriage, man gives talaq to wife in Odisha

Kendrapara: Just over a week after passage of a bill that criminalises the triple talaq practice, a woman here in Odisha’s Kendrapara district lodged a complaint against her husband, who reportedly pronounced ‘talaq’ thrice over phone.

The victim namely Rubina Khatun, daughter of Rahel Ali Khan of Pattamundai, alleged that her husband Abusufyan Khan, a resident of the same area, divorced her over phone after one year of their marriage.

According to reports, the couple was madly in love in past seven years and married before the Marriage Registrar in February last year. They went to Hyderabad where they spent their days happily for six months.

However, their seven-year love faded over time after Rubina became pregnant and her husband left her at his home in Pattamundai.

The victim said that her in-laws tortured her for dowry following which she went to her father’s house where she delivered her baby boy, who is now 3-month-old. Instead of accepting wife along with their son, the accused gave her ‘triple talaq’ over phone from Hyderabad.

“I went through mental and physical harassment by my in-laws and husband. After delivery when I called my husband to take us with him to Hyderabad, where he is working at a private firm, he got mad at me and said he does not know me. When I again approached him, he pronounced talaq thrice over phone,” Rubina alleged.

She also alleged her husband of marrying another woman after talaq.

A case has been lodged at Pattamundai Police Station over the issue.

The victim sought strong action against her husband for triple talaq as per the law.
