Bhubaneswar: Amid coronavirus scare globally, a social media post which has gone viral claims that consumption of alcohol will keep the Coronavirus at bay.

The post contains a screenshot with an image of CNN’s lead political anchor Wolf Blitzer, with the text ‘Alcohol kills coronavirus’.

But the fact is alcohol does not kill coronavirus. The screenshot is fake and contains a number of irregularity.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has published a list of mythbusters and debunk common misconceptions around COVID-19. It also suggested a few hygienic practices to prevent the transmission of the virus.

The WHO mentioned about the role of alcohol in handwashes and hand sanitisers in preventing the spread of coronavirus. However, it never claimed that consumption of alcohol fights COVID-19.

Alcohol can be used as a disinfectant but not as a reliable hospital-grade disinfectant.
