Amid Cyclone Gulab, another low pressure likely to form over Bay of Bengal

In view of cyclonic storm, Red warning issued for 7 districts in Odisha; Many districts on high alert.

Bhubaneswar: Amid Cyclonic storm Gulab that is heading towards Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts, one more low pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal next week.

“A cyclonic circulation is likely to emerge over Northeast & adjoining Eastcentral Bay of Bengal around 27th September. Under its influence, a Low Pressure Area is likely to develop over Northeast Bay of Bengal & neighbourhood during subsequent 24 hours. It is likely to move northwestwardsand reach West Bengal coast around 29th September,” Regional Meteorological Centre of IMD stated in a bulletin here today.

As per the IMD, the Deep Depression over north and adjoining central Bay of Bengal moved westwards with a speed of 14 kmph in last 6 hours and lay centered at 0830 hrs IST of September 25, 2021, over northwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal near Lat. 18.4°N and Long. 89.3°E, about 470 km eastsoutheast of Gopalpur (Odisha) & 540 km eastnortheast of Kalingapatnam (Andhra Pradesh).

It is likely to intensify into a Cyclonic Storm during next 06 hours. It is likely to move nearly westwards and cross north Andhra Pradesh – south Odisha coasts between Vishakhapatnam & Gopalpuraround Kalingapatnam by evening of September 26, 2021.

With the system is very likely to turn into cyclonic storm ‘Gulab’ over the sea, all major ports in Odisha and several districts in southern region have been put on alert.

The Regional MeT has issued red, orange and yellow warnings for several districts till September 29 morning.

From Sept 25 till Sept 26: (Yellow warning) Heavy rainfall very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Khurda, Puri, Nayagarh and Ganjam.

From Sept 26 till Sept 27: (Red warning) Heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy falls at one or two places very likely to occur over the districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Koraput and Malkangiri.

(Orange warning) Heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places very likely to occur over the districts of Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh and Kalahandi.

(Yellow warning) Heavy rainfall very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Cuttack, Boudh, Sonepur, Balangir and Nuapada.

From Sept 27 till Sept 28: (Orange warning) Heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places very likely to occur over the districts of Nabarangpur, Koraput and Malkangiri.

(Yellow warning) Heavy rainfall very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Nuapada, Balangir, Sonepur, Boudh, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada and Kalahandi.

From Sept 28 till Sept 29: (Yellow warning) Heavy rainfall very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Koraput and Malkangiri.

Wind warning: 

Squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph likely along and off Odisha coasts from September 25 morning. It will gradually increase becoming gale wind speed reaching 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph from afternoon of September 26 till midnight along & off south Odisha coasts.

It will gradually increase becoming gale wind speed reaching 75-85 kmph gusting to 95 kmph from afternoon of September 26 till midnight along & off south Odisha coasts (Ganjam, Gajapati Districts), 55 -65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph along & off Khordha, Puri, Rayagada & Koraput districts, 50 -60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph over Nabarangpur & Malkangiri. Squally wind speed reaching 40 -50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph likely to prevail along & off remaining parts of Odisha on 26th Sept. and over northeast Bay of Bengal on September 25 and 26.

Storm surge warning: 

Tidal wave of about 0.5 m height above the astronomical tide likely to inundate low lying areas of Ganjam districts during the time of landfall.

Sea condition: 

Under the influence of above system, sea condition will be rough to very rough over Northwest and adjoining West central Bay of Bengal and along and off Odisha coasts on September 25 and 26 and will be rough to very rough over Northwest Bay of Bengal and along and off Odisha coasts on September 27.

The fishermen are advised not to venture into sea, along & off Odisha, coasts northwest & adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal till September 27, 2021.
