Another ‘debt-ridden’ farmer commits suicide in Odisha

Kalahandi: Yet another “debt-ridden” young farmer committed suicide in Odisha’s Kalahandi district.

The deceased farmer has been identified as Parmananda Lahajal (28) of Gambhariguda village under Kokasara block in the district.

As per the available information, Parmananda had consumed poison last night and was admitted to the district headquarters hospital in Bhawanipatna. He died today.

The young farmer had borrowed Rs 35 lakh from a self-help group and cultivated paddy on over 4 acres.

According to family sources, Parmananda was mentally disturbed and distressed following his standing crops got damaged due to scanty rainfall and pest attack. He took the extreme step out of severe depression, the source added.

Similarly, a farmer, identified as Purnachandra Seth, a native of Nialpali village in Sundergarh district, had killed self by consuming poison on October 22.

Earlier in the month, Goutam Seth, a young farmer of Sambalpur district has committed suicide after his standing crop over 12-acre got damaged due to lack of water.
