Bargarh, Oct 2:
Yet another debt-ridden farmer committed suicide by consuming poison in Odisha’s Bargarh district today.
The deceased farmer has been identified as Ashwini Chirguna of Beniachal village under Bijepur block in Bargarh district.
According to family sources, Ashwini had no lands of his own and was a sharecropper. He had borrowed about Rs one lakh for cultivation. His crops were ruined due to scanty rainfall and he was unable to repay his loans. He was mentally disturbed for last few months as his lenders frequently sought repayment. With repayment prospects bleak, he took the extreme step.
“We had grown crops on 12 acres as a sharecropper. Crops were ruined due to scanty rainfall. Lenders used to frequently visit our house for their money. Left with little option, he took the extreme step by consuming poison,” said Rajkumari Chirguna, Ashwini’s widow.
