Mumbai/Bhubaneswar: Two more persons in the country tested positive for the Omicron variant of Covid-19 today, taking the total number of such patients in the country to four so far.

Maharashtra State Health Department sources said a 33-year-old person from Kalyan-Dombivli who recently returned from South Africa has been found positive for the Omicron variant. This is the first case of the new variant in Maharashtra State.

The passenger who is exhibiting mild symptoms, is currently under treatment at a Covid centre in Kalyan-Dombivali.

The infectee reached here from Cape Town on November 24 and then complained of low fever but has not exhibited any other symptoms, said the official.

Moving swiftly, the Thane health authorities launched a drive and traced 12 of his high-risk contacts and 23 low-risk contacts, but all have tested negative.

Earlier in the day, one case of the Omicron variant was detected in Jamnagar of Gujarat State. A person, who came from Zimbabwe, was infected with the variant. His sample was sent to Pune for further tests.

He arrived on November 28 to meet his father-in-law. After he got a fever, his doctor advised him to get an RT-PCR test done. As mandated, the private laboratory informed the health authorities that his report was Covid-19 positive.

The country's first two cases of the Omicron variant was reported in Karnataka State.
