Another inmate of Odisha jail contracts COVID-19

Berhampur: Adding to the worries about COVID-19 pandemic, another inmate of the Berhampur Circle Jail today tested positive for the deadly virus. Following this, the jail inmate has been shifted to the COVID Care Centre as per the directive of the court.

With this 15 inmates of the circle jail have tested positive for the virus so far.

The jail inmate (52), a resident of Kalupatra Sahi under Bada Bazaar police limits, was arrested on charges of ganja smuggling.

On June 30, the Ganjam district administration officials were frisking vehicles and persons in Bada Bazaar area. They spotted a minor boy carrying a bag. Suspecting something wrong, the officials searched the minor boy’s bag and found ganja stacked under cigarette packets in it.

Upon questioning, the minor boy informed the officials that he received the bag from the accused in Kalupatra Sahi. Later a joint team of Excise department officials and the district administration raided the house of the accused and arrested him.

Before forwarding him to court, swab test of the accused were carried out. The test reports received today showed that the accused tested COVID-19 positive, said an official.

Apart from the Excise Department and District Administration officials, some journalists came in contact with the accused.

The official added the symptomatic employees will undergo tests and if required, they will be sent to quarantine.
