Apart from conning women, fake Odisha doctor’s treatment claimed lives

Bhubaneswar: Ramesh Swain, who claims himself to be a Doctor and duped 21 women from different States after marrying them, has been allegedly involved in cheating innocent people in Odisha on the pretext of providing treatment.

Swain has been running a clinic at a rented place in Kamakhyanagar of Dhenkanal district from 1990 to 2010. He was diagnosing patients from the area and many lost their lives due to wrong medications. Also, he duped people in the name of helping them buy house or plot.

Binod Kumar Panigrahi, a resident of Kamakhyanagar said, “My father was being treated by Ramesh Swain for stomach-related ailments. However, after taking the medicines, my father developed hernia. After Swain suggested us to take my father to a hospital in Cuttack, we took him to the Surakshya Nursing Home. Swain also accompanied us to take my father to the Surakshya Nursing Home.”

In the private nursing home, one Manju madam carried out the operation. Even though my father was admitted to the nursing home for hernia, he was operated upon at the stomach. We believe during the operation my father’s kidneys might have been taken away. We stayed at the nursing home for three days after operation as my father developed septic and the wound was not healing.

Towards medicine Swain took Rs 85,000 from us. Prior to the operation, he also took Rs 50,000 as advance. When we thought to take my father to another hospital, Swain asked us to sign an undertaking mentioning that the doctors at the Surakshya Nursing Home will not be responsible, if anything goes wrong. We signed the undertaking and then took my father to the Panda Nursing Home in Cuttack. Within two days he expired.

Before the treatment, Swain took Rs 60,000 from Binod Kumar’s father on the pretext of helping him buy a house.

Another victim of the fake doctor Swain, another resident Somanath Senapati said, “Swain asked me to take my wife for ultrasound to his clinic when she complained of illness, one year after giving birth my first son. After an ultrasound at his clinic, Swain said my wife has wound inside the body.”

Swain gave some medicine to Senapati’s wife and said if she recovers, it’s good. Otherwise she would have to undergo stomach wash.

But she died on the day when medicine got over, said Senapati.

Swain, who had failed the Matriculation exam, was posing himself as a Doctor and cheated 21 women from different states after marrying them on different occasions. Based on the complaint filed by one of the victims, the Commissionerate Police arrested Swain from his flat in Khandagiri area last week.
