Assistant Collector attacked by sand mafia in Odisha’s Dhenkanal

Kamakhyanagar Assistant Collector Madan Mohan Jena and his team had detained two sand-laden tractors near Mrudanga High School under Bhuban police limits at around 6.30 am when the incident took place.

Bhuban/Kamakhyanagar: With illegal sand mining continuing to be a concern, two district administration officials including an Assistant Collector were attacked by the mafia when they were apprehended in Bhuban town of Kamakhyanagar in Dhenkanal district of Odisha on Thursday.

As per reports, Kamakhyanagar Assistant Collector Madan Mohan Jena and his team had detained two sand-laden tractors near Mrudanga High School under Bhuban police limits at around 6.30 am when the incident took place. They suspected illicit activity as both the vehicles did not have any number plates and immediately informed the revenue authorities. But since there was delay in arrival of the revenue inspector, the tractor drivers took advantage of the situation and started unloading the sand to avoid payment of fine. However, things suddenly took a turn when the accused suddenly attacked Assistant Collector and one of his team members Subrat Behera after seeing the latter recording the unloading activity on his mobile phone.

The drivers reportedly snatched the mobile phones of both the officials and even broke the window panes of their vehicle. While the tractor  drivers managed to flee from the scene  following the attack, Assistant Collector suffered injuries and was later was admitted in Bhuban hospital. He has filed a complaint in this regard with Bhuban police.

Commenting on the incident, Bhuban IIC Soubhagya Kumar Swain said a probe has been initiated after a case was registered following the filing of the complaint. Both the seized mobile phones have been receovered but the accused are yet to be nabbed.
