Bhubaneswar, Apr 20:

It’s good news for wildlife lovers in Odisha-the Nandankanan Zoological Park on the capital city outskirts has a new guest, a baby chimpanzee.

Female chimpanzee, Purnima has given birth to a baby chimp today at 9.42 am. With the newborn, the number of chimpanzees in the zoo has gone up to five.

Both the mother and newborn are in good health.

However, no officials are being allowed to go inside the enclosure where the mother chimpanzee and the newborn are housed.

Only, keepers are being allowed into the enclosure albeit occasionally, Nandankanan Zoo authorities said.

“Nobody is allowed into the enclosure for seven days, not even officers. They are chimpanzees, not other animals, they can harm their baby. The baby chimp was born at 9.42 am. They are in good health till now. Sex of the newborn cannot be ascertained now,” informed Jayant Das, Deputy Director, Nandankanan Zoological Park.
