Backroom warriors in full gear for battle 2019

New Delhi: While candidates in the Dangal 2019 are busy with campaigning, there is another lot of warriors working backstage: busy mining through election data and making assessments, devising strategies and analysing and re-analysing the trends.

These are the political consultants and strategists who are toiling for 12-14 hours a day and sparing no effort to clinch a win for their clients.

Aiding them is an army of hundreds of young men and women – researchers, digital marketers, analysts and software engineers.

Electioneering in India has changed a great deal. Now to woo the voters, the parties and their candidates cannot rely merely on campaigning and poll promises.

Winning a seat needs much more and here comes the role of specialists who have different tags attached to them – campaign managers, political analysts, political consultants/strategists and election managers.

While Prashant Kishore still remains the poster boy, his tribe is growing fast and many new names have emerged who have made a mark in the field by garnering victories for their clients.

According to trade association ASSOCHAM, there were nearly 150 political consultants in India in 2014, which have now grown to 300 as claimed by industry insiders. The number is still growing.

Promising their clients a swing of the voting public, they employ a whole lot of innovative and cutting edge techniques and custom-made tools to fulfil their promise and achieve victory for their clients.

Do they use different strategies when it comes to Assembly and Lok Sabha polls?

Naresh Arora, political strategist and director of campaign management company Design Boxed who has helped in preparing poll strategies of political stalwarts like Sachin Pilot, Captain Amarinder Singh, T.S. Singh Deo and Kiran Choudhary, says: “Yes, definitely, considering the tenor of both the elections is different and hence the strategy has to be made accordingly. Assembly elections concentrate more on local issues, whereas Lok Sabha elections are premised upon pan India issues.”

Arora is currently working in a new project in Maharashtra and aiming at the 2019 general elections.

Echoing his views, Vivek Bagri, Director of the political consultancy and management firm Lead Tech, which claims to have devised over 1,000 campaigns across the country, says: “Our approach was to reach out to the voters directly in the Assembly elections and door to door campaign by volunteers and party workers was more important. But in Lok Sabha elections, indirect communication is an important factor.”

About the specific strategy for Dangal 2019, he says: “In parliamentary election 2019, our main strategy revolves around the narratives and agenda built by the media and top 2-3 national leaders.”

With the elections just weeks away, not only every day but every minute counts and the war rooms are full of hustle and bustle.

Arora, who has conceptualised campaigns like “Main Captain De Naal” in Punjab, “Jan Ghoshna Patra” campaign in Chhattisgarh, “Rajasthan ka report card” et al, describes the day as “a 24×7 effort”.

“Analysis in the morning is followed by implementation of strategies decided a day prior. As the day progresses, further analysis of the issues keeps us occupied, followed by content production apart from the continued monitoring of the feedback given by the ground teams. Lastly, the performance of the day is assessed and then strategy for the following day is worked upon, based on the analysis and feedback received from the ground teams.”

Challenges are also galore in this mission and tackling fake news is one of them.

“Due to social media, a lot of fake news comes so verification has also become a big challenge in the war room. The war room is full of hustle and bustle for the party or leader who is in the winning edge whereas, for those on the back foot, there is a huge seriousness in their arena,” says Bagri.

With scientific data handling analysis and cutting edge strategies, some campaign managers claim they can ensure at least 2-5 per cent vote swing.

“The right approach in formulating the strategy makes a lot of difference. Campaign managers and political consultants can actually increase the vote share by up to 5 per cent by hitting the bull’s eye at the right time. Using pre-poll surveys at the grassroot level, if proper voter segmentation, analysis of the electorate and trends is done, then a leader winning with a thin margin can actually turn the tables in his favour in a major way,” claims Bagri.
